Blogging is something that can be beneficial for all business owners. Yes, it does help with SEO and can help your site rank higher – but that’s not the only benefit. Writing about your industry allows you to think critically and stay up to date with the latest developments. Here are some blogging tips to keep in mind if you’re currently writing blogs or thinking about starting one.
Keep One Keyword/Search Term in Mind
You may be tempted to include many SEO terms you want to rank for. However, making many search terms work naturally into the content is almost impossible. Keep one in mind as you write, but a helpful tip is to ensure the search term is in the title. If it is, it will likely be present in the rest of the blog.
Don’t Get Too Technical
Two types of “people” will be reading your blogs. One type is searchers looking for more information on your service. The other is Google. For both of your “readers”, it’s important to avoid being too technical. Google is “reading” your content to see if it contains keywords people are searching for. These search terms will likely not involve high-level industry terms, so your content shouldn’t either. For example, we wouldn’t use the sentence:
“Optimizing your website’s CSS coding through minimization can enhance your website’s performance on SERPs.”
Instead, we would use:
“Optimizing your website’s coding can increase your rankings on search engines.”
If we used the sentence full of industry terms, we could be missing out on people searching for “increase your rankings on search engines” which is a much more likely Google search to be made by a potential client than “enhance your website’s performance on SERPs”.
Set A Realistic Expectation for Word Count
Yes, the more words you have, the better it is for SEO. However, one of my favorite phrases is “Done, and not perfect is better than perfect and not done”. For instance, one 1500-word blog once a quarter is not as beneficial as a 300-word blog once per week. Set a realistic goal, which brings us to our next rule…
Be Consistent
Many business owners will have a great start to a blog, but all too often, it stops completely. Set aside 1-2 hours to get a blog together each week. However, if you miss one week, it’s not the end of the world! Just like going to the gym, it’s about consistency. Missing a few visits is ok, but stopping entirely can hurt your progress!
